The House Always Wins
Sorry for the long rant, just desperately need to vent.
So I gambled against Uber tonight and lost, BIGLY. Received a Reservation request from “Logan Creek” going to Reno International Airport for $110 for 8pm. While navigating traffic I tried to Google “Logan Creek”, “Logan Creek, NV”, “Logan Creek, CA”, “Logan Creek Tahoe”, etc. etc. to no avail. I figured South Lake Tahoe to Reno is an hour door-to-door so I figured it had to be at most an hour to get to the pickup, so I logged on to both Uber and Lyft at 5:30pm in hopes of getting a ride TO Tahoe so that I don’t have to deadhead 60 minutes to get to the pickup.
Of course we all know about Uber’s lockout for reservation rides, so I didn’t think I’d get anything from them but tried hedging my bet with Lyft. 90 minutes later, nada, so I start (begrudgingly) driving down 580 to get to the pickup. 5 minutes later: boom, $47 to go to Incline Village. I accept and head to the pickup, 5 minutes in the same direction as the reservation. Get to the Lyft pickup, and the pax has 4 suitcases and a cooler full of liquor. Got everything loaded in about a minute and we’re on our way. Lyft estimates 35 minutes to Incline Village, ETA 7:45pm.
Of course 7:20pm I get the “It’s time to head to your pickup” from Uber, estimated arrival time is 8pm sharp. So you could imagine the horror when I start getting the “You might lose this fare” messages from Uber every 5 minutes. Now I’m absolutely ripping down Mt. Rose Hwy, doing 80 in a 65. Get to the drop off at 7:45pm on the dot, valet helps unload the luggage and cooler with the efficiency of an F1 team. Pulled out of the parking lot so fast I almost blew through the automatic gate. Of course, no tip.
Now the estimated arrival time is 8:05pm. Call the pax to let them know I’m running 5 minutes late, he says no problem. No sooner does the call end does Uber cancel the reservation, claiming I wasn’t making progress to the pickup quick enough. Of course I threw my phone still in the cradle into the trunk in sheer disgust. Lost $110 because of Uber’s asinine timeout.
Rant over, point the story: don’t bother with Reservations.
