Uber, Lyft Drivers in Massachusetts Win Right to Unionize (1)


Massachusetts Uber and Lyft drivers won the chance to form a union and collectively negotiate their pay and benefits, with a majority of voters approving a first-of-its-kind bargaining model for the rideshare industry.

The proposal (Ballot Question 3) won 53.9% of the vote in Tuesday’s election, according to vote tallies from The Associated Press with 95% of votes counted at midday Wednesday.

The new law sets up a state-supervised labor process for the more than 84,000 registered rideshare drivers in Massachusetts. It advances a variation on the industry sector-based bargaining that’s more common in Europe.
