Why Is Uber Hiring Eric Holder?

Hopefully Holder is better at cracking down on sexual harassment than he was at cracking down on Wall Street. Ana Kasparian and Ben Mankiewicz, hosts of The Young Turks, discuss. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. http://tytnetwork.com/go

“Uber has hired former U.S. attorney general Eric Holder to help lead an investigation into claims of sexual harassment and discrimination that a former female employee made public over the weekend in a highly circulated blog post.

Chief executive Travis Kalanick told employees in a memo Monday that the review will be conducted in “short order” and that it will involve, among others, the participation of Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post and an Uber board member, and Liane Hornsey, the company’s recently hired human resources chief.

Susan Fowler Rigetti wrote that during her year working as an engineer at Uber she and other female staffers reported multiple instances of sexual harassment and discrimination to the company’s human resources department.

Rigetti wrote that soon after starting at the company she received messages from a manager stating he was in an “open relationship” and that he made advances toward her. When she reported the incident to human resources, Rigetti wrote, she was told it was the manager’s first offense and she was advised to transfer teams. Rigetti wrote that she later learned other women had also complained about the same manager.”*

  1. The whole thing seems to be blown out of proportion if not totally made up. She most likely got hit on by a manager, overheard somebody saying something once or twice and wrote a sensationalist blog post about it. If she's got screenshots why didn't she publish them on her blog? Is it because the harassment isn't really harassment, or is it that it didn't happen at all?

  2. Kalanick (The guy that runs uber) referred to his own company as Boob-er on GQ. A top exec. sexually assaulted his maid just a few months ago, and there are countless sexual assault accusations against numerous drivers as is… They are in trouble, if they do not take things seriously Lyft is going to deliver a coup de gras (watch for Autonomous Chevy Bolts with pink mustaches in 2018)

Also, that "independent review" is bullshit.

Holder is on the record as Pro-Uber already, and there is a number of close ties between the firm he is a partner at (Covington & Burling) and Uber (where did Robert Wu work before joining Uber?). If that wasn't enough, the only other people that will be conducting this "independent review" (not an investigation) is a member of Uber's General Council, their head of Human Resources and a member of their Board (Huffington)

Yea… they are going to be super critical of the hand that feeds them

  3. When it comes to software engineers specifically, there really are less women than men entering the field. I can't speak for Uber obviously. But go to any computer science/software engineering department in any college in America. you will see less women than in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil engineering or in the physics dept. This is why google started that program to get more young girls interested in writing code. Despite this i think tech companies and start-ups should hire as many women as they can; and hopefully younger women will see that women can get these jobs and start supplying themselves. But the low percentage of female software engineers is no myth.

  4. I have a hard time believing that human resources would tell someone claiming harrassment that they aren't going to pursue action against the perpetrator because he makes them a lot of money. Even if that's true, there's no way they tell you that.

  5. *YAWN SMOKE AND MIRRORS FROM THE LEFT* Uber is now the big bad guy for the CEO's endorsement of Trump so now we'll hear a bunch of lame shit from the media and TYT on everything any low level employee in Uber has ever done, and somehow use that as a way to attack the CEO….

  6. you're right on the verge point your way out of the ballpark on the second point. there are very few women in engineering because there are very few women pursuing it. that is a fact. however it doesn't mean because your outnumbered 100 – 1 that gives you the right to harass the one.

  7. Holy shit! It astounds me that an engineer went through all that in this 'modern' day. I am the only woman engineer in my department and I have never had any kind of trouble with my co-workers. Although the vendors can be idiots sometimes (nothing big, just occasional callus remarks). Just hearing about this makes me so angry on her behalf. I'd stir up a huge pot of stench if something like that happened to me. My hopes are that Uber handles the results of that investigation well, for the sake of all the women working there.

  8. Why would Eric Holder be responsible for cracking down on wall street? Eric Holder was Attorney General who is the head of the DOJ- an executive branch agency. The DOJ is not responsible for regulating Wall Street. The DOJ levies criminal enforcement, not regulation of policy in markets. That job is for the SEC, who does not work for the DOJ. The DOJ can rule per se against wallstreet corporations, but do such action means that you believe they are in violation of Anti-Trust law and the Sherman Act. What happened in the 2007 crash had nothing to do with Trusts…

I'm confused as to why you think Eric Holder was responsible for cracking down on WallStreet?

  9. Well if this is true, the fact that this impacted her performance/promotion, this is definitely sexual harassment. Of both sorts, quid pro quo and hostile work environment.
Glad it's being looked into, seems it's a systemic issue, not a one off thing.

  10. I love the comments here, where ever there is something going on you "scene kids" show up posting the stupidest things, the absence of well thought out commentary by most just goes to show how wasteful with your own time, your life, how little meaning it has to yourself, pretty sad.
