Rating Is Revenue
A low rating does not just hurt your feelings. It gets you fewer premium requests, longer wait times between pings during slow periods, and in some markets it disqualifies you from certain ride types. That directly hits your wallet. So treat rating like the business metric it is.
The truth is passengers rarely rate you 5 stars for being amazing. They rate you 5 stars for not annoying them. Your job is to remove friction, not add flair.
Killer 1: Scent
Smell is the fastest way to lose a 5-star. Old food, heavy air freshener, cigarette residue, or strong cologne all trigger a 1-star reflex. Keep it neutral. Lightly clean fabric surfaces weekly, take out trash daily, and never use those overpowering tree fresheners. A barely-there clean scent beats a cloud of vanilla every time.
Keep a small trash bag visible but empty. Passengers notice when you care about cleanliness before they step in. It signals respect.
"You do not need to deep clean daily. You need to never let your car cross the line where a passenger wrinkles their nose."
Killer 2: Driving That Feels Unsafe
Hard braking is the number one complaint that drives low ratings. Not speeding. Braking. It makes passengers feel unsafe and makes them physically uncomfortable. Leave more following distance and look three cars ahead, not one.
Also, stop making last-second lane changes for navigation. Missing a turn and going around the block is better than cutting across two lanes. Passengers would rather arrive 90 seconds later than feel like they almost died.
Killer 3: Forced Conversation
Some passengers want to chat. Most want quiet, especially morning commuters. Open with a short friendly greeting, then read the room. If they put in earbuds, look at their phone, or give short answers, let them be. Quiet is a feature, not a failure.
Pro move: Keep the music low and neutral. Let them ask to change it. That gives them control and control drives rating.
Killer 4: Pickup Chaos
If a passenger has to run across a street or walk around a block because you stopped in the wrong spot, you already lost the 5-star. Use the pickup note. Call out the landmark. If the pin is inside a building, slow down and confirm before you stop.
At night, flash your hazards for 3 seconds as you approach so they know you are their car. It removes anxiety and starts the ride on a calm note.
Killer 5: Ignoring the Obvious Need
Luggage means open the trunk without being asked. Groceries mean ask where they want bags. Rain means pull as close to cover as you can. These are not extras. They are the job.
Fix these five and your rating climbs within two weeks. Then protect it with a 2-minute post-shift reset: trash out, wipe high-touch spots, quick seat check. Small habits, real money.
